Because a disproportionate number of women are affected by poverty, we endeavor to increase women’s participation in income-generating activities. Our work focuses primarily on the agricultural sector, where woman do much of the labor and often see very little of the profits. In administering programs worldwide, CNFA is committed to giving women access to the training and resources they need to prosper. Even going beyond donor requirements and prescribed indicators, we seek to improve women’s lives in the long term.
We worked with over 2,500 women in Pakistan to improve kitchen gardening so they would have a secondary source of income. One woman commented: “Nobody ever thought about us before, a life changing miracle happened and everyone witnessed it. Because these trainings now enable us to earn and save money for our living.”
In Africa, the disparity between labor and profit is particularly large for women. In Malawi, the female agrodealers we have worked with have been overall more successful than their male counterparts. By bringing them actively into the agricultural value chain, our project provided them with a more sustainable income source and positions of leadership in their communities. Please see below for a selection of examples of how CNFA's approach benefits women.
