Georgia: Agribusiness Development Activity

Facilitating the Emergence of a Vibrant High-Value Agricultural Sector

An active and profitable high-value agricultural sector in Georgia would serve as a major contributor to the overall growth and well-being of the Georgian economy while generating widespread rural employment opportunities. To help expand this vibrant sector in Georgia, CNFA is implementing the $15 million Agribusiness Development Activity (ADA). The program is funded under a contract from the Millennium Challenge Georgia Fund (MCG) as part of the Compact between the Georgian government and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

ADA catalyzes local, matching investment from Georgian partner enterprises and farmers, and through matching grants farmers will be enabled to access innovative agricultural production technology, inputs (i.e. seed, feed, fertilizer and machinery), quality control practices and output marketing. Improvement in any one of these aspects has the benefit of adding market value to the raw farm product. Farmers will benefit through increased linkages to processing and exporting businesses and to cash markets.

The project will improve production through matching enterprise development grants, which allow farmers to upgrade equipment. ADA also facilitates new, stronger market linkages and provides farmers with reliable sources of inputs and methods to market their higher-value products. Because the project is focused on high-value agriculture, it specifically targets value-adding enterprises.

Targeted industries include:

  • dairy production and processing
  • private sector input supply/output marketing enterprises
  • livestock production and processing
  • production, post-harvest handling and processing high-value fresh fruits and vegetables
  • potato storage and production
