Climate and Environment
Improving productivity and resilience through climate-smart practices.
CNFA helps communities shift to sustainable, climate-smart agricultural techniques that provide producers with the means of bolstering productivity while mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change. Through input service and delivery interventions such as introducing drought-resistant crop varieties, integrated soil health and fertility management, water resource management, and nutrition-sensitive and climate-resilient production practices, we work with producers to address environmental challenges while safeguarding their livelihoods.
CNFA’s integrated water resource management approach increases water access through irrigation and other infrastructure improvements, improves community ownership, and supports the restoration and protection of natural resources. These essential efforts help communities expand access to water infrastructure for household use and agricultural production. Our programs are designed to provide the tools needed to minimize the climate impacts of food loss and spoilage, such as with post-harvest handling and cold storage equipment. These practices, in turn, help increase revenue, improve food availability, and promote the efficient use of energy and water in food production, transportation, and packaging. Our climate-smart efforts are closely tied to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). By addressing water scarcity and use issues, we help improve community health outcomes.
CNFA’s climate-smart programming takes an inclusive approach. Youth, women, and marginalized groups are supported by strong public and private sector engagement in driving economic growth. Through an inclusive market systems approach, we facilitate the adoption of environmentally sound innovations and technologies, while also helping farmers increase yields and strengthen resilience and food security. This targeted effort leads to continued progress allowing greater crop diversity, circular economy practices, improved use of natural resources, and better market access.
