Alan Pieper

President and Chief Executive Officer

Alan Pieper brings over 30 years of experience in private sector banking, agricultural finance, and international development to CNFA.  

Pieper has worked extensively throughout Eastern Europe and the Middle East, building financial institutions, implementing credit programs, and helping agriculture producers and small businesses access financing and grow their businesses. As Chief of Party and Chief Executive Officer of the American Bank of Kosovo, he led the startup of a full-service commercial bank that attracted €65 million in deposits, disbursed over €50 million in SME and agriculture loans, and was successfully privatized through its sale to Raiffeisen Bank. In Palestine, he led a program that opened the U.S. market to fresh Palestinian herbs for the first time, generated over $14 million in new annual exports, and created 2,000 jobs. In Ukraine, he led a national program to mobilize private sector financing for public infrastructure through public-private partnerships. 

Before entering international development, Pieper spent nearly a decade in senior management at  the Farm Credit institution, where he directed accounting and finance operations,  managed institutional restructuring during the U.S. farm crisis of the 1980s, and oversaw financial services delivery across a three-state region.   

Pieper joined CNFA at its Washington headquarters in 2013 as Senior Vice President of Operations and Compliance, was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2015, and now serves as President and CEO. He is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance from Washington University and a Master of Science in Agribusiness Economics from Southern Illinois University.
