Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus

Since 1992, CNFA has worked across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus to drive long-term economic growth through agricultural development, while connecting American agribusinesses to trade and investment opportunities in the region.

Trade and Markets

We open new markets for American agricultural companies and connect regional producers to global buyers—generating measurable returns on every dollar invested. From facilitating U.S. company market entry to driving export sales through targeted trade promotion, our work creates direct commercial wins for American businesses and host country partners alike.

  • $3.8M in U.S. agricultural product sales facilitated for 13 companies from 10 states (Azerbaijan)
  • 292% return on investment on trade fairs for agribusiness clients over 4 years (Georgia)
  • U.S. companies in seed, machinery, cold storage, and technology successfully entered Caucasus markets
  • Armenian and Georgian wine exporters established in the U.S. market
  • Significant regional exports to U.S. private label markets and UAE

Finance and Investment

We mobilize private capital into agriculture by reducing lending risk, building financial institution capacity, and connecting agribusinesses to the investment they need to compete and grow. Across six countries, CNFA has facilitated nearly $300 million in private agricultural investment—leveraging donor dollars at a 3:1 ratio.

  • $300M in private agricultural investment facilitated across 6 countries
  • 3:1 private-to-donor leverage ratio across the portfolio
  • 40+ financial institutions mapped as investment partners (Armenia)
  • 71 Savings and Credit Associations established (Moldova)
  • $900K in microcredit injected to seed rural lending markets (Moldova)

Input Supply and Distribution

We build self-sustaining agricultural input networks that create markets and connect farmers to private sector services. Our Farm Service Center (FSC) model—first piloted in this region and now replicated across three continents—has generated 200+ commercially viable, privately operated retail networks serving hundreds of thousands of farmers annually.

  • 85 village-based farm stores established, serving 500,000+ farmers annually for 25+ years (Moldova)
  • 40+ Farm Service Centers delivering inputs and services to 250,000+ farmers annually (Georgia)
  • 21 privately operated Machinery Service Centers serving 9,000+ small farmers (Georgia)
  • FSC Model piloted in Ukraine and Romania, replicated across Europe, Asia, and Africa

High-Value Agriculture

We build export-competitive, high-value agriculture supply chains by linking farmers and processors to U.S. technology, know-how, and private investment. From cold chain infrastructure to food safety certification, our work opens international markets and drives commercial growth—anchored by public-private partnerships with leading firms.

  • $149M in hazelnut sales generated through U.S.-Georgia-Ferrero Group public-private partnership (Georgia)
  • $6.9M in hazelnut-sector investment facilitated; 211 jobs created (Georgia)
  • 100+ cold storage enterprises developed, transforming fresh produce postharvest (Georgia)
  • Trade delegations to Washington State, Oregon, Kansas, and North Carolina connecting regional buyers to U.S. producers and technologies
  • Blockchain traceability, automated fertigation, and optical sorting introduced regionally

U.S. Agribusiness Expertise

We deploy senior American agribusiness volunteers to transfer cutting-edge U.S. expertise directly into priority markets—driving measurable productivity gains, introducing modern technologies, and strengthening the enterprises that buy American inputs and adopt American practices. Our volunteers generate rapid commercial returns at low cost.

  • Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan reached through U.S. volunteer deployment since 1992
  • 200+ organizations supported in postharvest handling, technical education, and public-private partnerships across 9 countries
  • Volunteer assignments provided targeted agribusiness expertise across fruit and vegetable, dairy, and livestock industries

Agricultural Resilience and Market Continuity

We protect agricultural markets and investment from disruption—whether from conflict, disease, or natural disaster—by mobilizing rapidly through established private sector networks. Our ability to maintain market continuity safeguards the commercial relationships and trade flows that U.S. and host country agribusinesses depend on.

  • 36,000 hectares of crops planted despite active conflict through rapid private sector mobilization (Georgia)
  • 40,000 farm families reached with voucher-based inputs and machinery services following Russian invasion (Georgia)
  • 94 communities supported in developing disaster risk reduction strategies along Georgia’s Administrative Boundary Line
  • Digital tools deployed to streamline housing access for 100,000+ displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabagh (Armenia)
